Translator’s Note

I am delighted to present excerpts from the scholarly work of Sir Kaman Rafmin.  His guide to the weeds of the Domha’vei is clear, concise and pertinent, giving us the description, history and import of these plants summarized in short, well-written paragraphs.

Would that our authors would do the same with the emanations!  Dear reader, I am lost.  Are you?  Does the Matriarch, in her nightly wakings, ever jolt to consciousness, saying, “Who the hell are you?”  Does she ever say, “Bring me that datapad Manasseh, uh Marius, uh, Malachi?”

Well, this text, at least, strives to explain the origin of this confusing and excessive state of affairs.  The drama begins in poignancy and ends in orgies, which seems par for the course for our heroes.  If you ever wondered what a woman would do if she were immortal, autocratic, immensely wealthy, and married to a man who was capable of assuming a panoply of attractive forms, the answer is “Get laid.  A lot.” I do not apologize in the least for spoiling the surprise.  You guessed it anyways, didn’t you?

It seems that human nature has changed little in sixteen centuries.

At least, unlike the last text that I was grudgingly forced to translate, this one seems to have some value as a political record, as well as an investigation of the origin of the mysterious Nau’gsh.  It is my fervent hope that I will be provided with the rest of Sir Kaman’s excellent opus, and that a full translation will be available shortly.
