Biography:

Malachi first emanates in 3608 in front of Goliath, as a direct messenger from Ashtara to Tara.  Half-Davy, half-Dermot, he shares some of Davy’s creative ability; his first act is to bring the Blue Moth Mushroom into existence.  He explains that because he is articulate, he lack’s Davy’s flawless inspiration – Malachi can create only what he can explain.

The Blue Moth Mushrooms are intended as ectomycorrhizae to assist Ashtara’s roots in adapting to multiple universes, allowing him to grow through wormholes and thus connect trees across vast distances.  This will allow Atlas and Goliath to co-exist and its emanations to become conscious of each other.

Goliath goes through an adjustment period, causing Malachi to fall ill.  In his feverish state, he sees the vision of Tara’s Destiny which caused Atlas to take root.  Not long after, he switches emanation and shares the vision with the others.  He leaves a letter explaining everything to Tara.

Malachi next appears at the press conference for the new emanations.  He attempts to discuss theology with the show’s hosts and then transforms into the mothman.

In The Poison Garden, it is Malachi who first realizes that Lugh’s love for Owen serves as a sort of self-preservation instinct, and that when it is disrupted, Ashtara tends to do risky things.

In “The Prophecy of Mushrooms,” Tara returns to Eden at Malachi’s request.  They go to visit Goliath – Malachi explains to Tara that the branches grow from the center outward in order of emanation.  He impresses Tara with a parody of Robert Herrick, and reveals that the Blue Moth Mushrooms are strong psychedelics – Tara’s response is, of course, to eat one.  She has a vision of the branches being multiple colors, and enlists Malachi to help her paint them with powdered vegetable dyes.  He tells her that emanations are sometimes swapped when a branch becomes too heavy with fruit – and Tara then realizes that the trees require regular harvesting.  She eats one of Malachi’s apples and discovers that nau’gshtamine-amide T synthesizes with the psychedelic.  At the end of the experience, Malachi and Tara decide to produce a new drug – called Happy Trails, it is a Blue Moth Mushroom derivative, but the psychedelic effect only works if the user is happy and intensifies with positive emotions.

In The Perpetual Rose, Malachi assists Davy in the design of the Yggdrasil branches and writes a letter with instructions for Axel.  He also designs the glowkrill traded to the Floatfish in exchange for teleportation.

When Lorcan immolates himself with the Denolin Turym, Malachi emanates.  He and Tara try to figure out what has just happened – why so many of the Bhavashti seedlings died and why Lorcan acted as he did.  They have contact with one of the first Bhavashti.  Malachi tries to convince Tara to abandon Yggdrasil, but she insists on setting up house at Nightside – she will not reject any part of Ash no matter how inhospitable the surroundings.

At the end of the novel, Malachi reveals that Ash has given up trying to create a perfect emanation – instead, he’s trying to express the totality of his being through the presence of all the emanations combined.
