19: Rand

Tara is shaking me.  “Are you all right?”

“It was horrible…it…”  I grip her hand tightly, trying to catch my breath.  “I think this is very similar to the human phenomenon of waking up from a nightmare.  I came out of it just as the creature was about to devour me.”

“I’m glad you did,” says Tara, looking away suddenly.  “Look, maybe this isn’t such a good idea after all.”

“I’ll be all right.  I have to be.  I have to remember.”

She looks back at me.  Her eyes meet mine only briefly.  “Maybe the reason you can’t remember is because it’s too awful.  Ash suffered a lot of trauma – especially Lorcan.”

“Lorcan?”

“Maybe there’s another way.  We can use my journal.”  She grabs her datapad from the dresser and flicks through it.  Then she looks up suddenly.  “Actually, I had forgotten about a lot of the things in the early entries.  At the time, it wasn’t that important, but some of it is relevant to what’s happening now.  I think you’d better read it.”

I take the datapad from her.  I’m grateful, both because it might prove to be a valuable resource – and because I’m none too eager to remember what happened to Beat.
