21: Rand

She put all her trust in Ashtara.  And Ashtara still does not trust her enough to let me remember.  I’m outraged.  How dare he not trust her?  For the sake of my n’aashet n’aaverti, I’m ready to do battle with God.

I read about what happened when Dermot and Davy tried that.  It was futile.  I want to also say that it was unwise, but if I understand the narrative correctly, it was also inevitable.  No, I won’t do battle with Ashtara – because he doesn’t will it.

Instead I say, “That girl was a Fenntian.  I’m sure of it.”

“It makes sense.  They were the ones starting the riots on Tasea.  That’s why Lord Danak was so upset the second time we went to Tucana.  He thought it was a distraction – he wanted to push along the Shambhala project to defuse some of the political tensions growing in the Domha’vei.”

“Second time?  Why would we go back there?”

“For one, Yggdrasil is there.  Anywhere there’s an Ashtree is my home.  We’ll go back again, eventually.  But at the time, we were addressing the more pressing problem of saving the Great Dread from complete eradication.”

I can’t see any particular reason to be concerned about them, and I say so.

“Keep reading,” says Tara.  “It wasn’t as simple as it seemed.”
