[Translator’s note: The desserts, with exceptions to be noted, follow Dolparessan dietary prescriptions. All desserts requiring a starch component use javamelon flour. Nuts are not employed and seedless varieties of berries are used. For spiced desserts, mace (seed coat) and cinnamon (bark) pose no moral dilemma; the use of ginger (roots) and cloves (dried flower buds) are left to the discretion of the emanation; nutmeg and allspice (both seeds) are forbidden. Since vanilla is generally propagated through cuttings, there is no objection to its use on the grounds that it is a seed pod, but as it must be hand pollinated anywhere outside of its natural habitat (a small region of Earth), its use indicates a degenerate nature: vanilla is for perverts.
Chase is the first emanation to violate these unspoken rules, and most likely due to carelessness. His poppy-seed cake is not only taboo, but rich enough in opiates to produce false positives in a particular brand of cut-rate narcotics test. Ari employs black walnuts as a deliberate protest against cultural traditions he feels to be pointless and stultifying; Valentin uses Eden blue popcorn to express his pride in his origins. Thomas has no idea why his fritters contain coconut, but they seem to taste very good. The most blatant disregard of dietary prescriptions is Harsh: “Skarsian Delight” (not to be confused with Turkish delight) is a broad term referring to any nut-based sweet such as nougat, halvah, barfi, pralines, marzipan and various nut-brittles. These confections were banned upon Dolparessa, hence the name – one needed to go to Skarsia to obtain them.]
