Biography:
First appearing in The Poison Garden, Ethan and his brother Barnabas emanate in 3610. They are extraordinarily similar to Lugh and Owen, and are sent to replace them, as Lugh and Owen are quarreling and refuse to cooperate with each other. Ethan and Barnabas are supposed to finish some experiments concerning the transmission of nul-energy through a wormhole, but before they can get far, Ethan is kidnapped by Lilith. It becomes clear that Ash has sent them at this particular time so that Ethan can function as a decoy, since Lilith is unaware of the properties of dual emanations. Ethan is imprisoned in a nul-energy containment cage, but Ash is not completely incapacitated because Barnabas is free to react.
When Ethan is located, Lilith orders Barnabas to put his hands up – both Ethan and Barnabas comply – which results in Ash emanating Lugh and Owen in their places. This is the first time it is discovered that a set of dual emanations can replace another set directly. After the situation with Lilith is resolved, Ethan and Barnabas continue to help Owen and Cüinn with the nul-energy experiment.
In The Perpetual Rose, Ethan and Barnabas help with the Krunchy Krill project. Otherwise, they do nothing – which is a plot point. Tara complains that they never emanate, and Ethan laments that he feels like they are ripoffs of Lugh and Owen who have not found their niche.
