Biography:
The Portable Grove: Ellery’s emanation happens between the end of Perpetual Rose and the beginning of Portable Grove. In a flashback, it is revealed that Ellery emanated solely for the purpose of keeping Quennel from being a lone branch – more than most other branches, Quennel is concerned that he is able to pollinate and be pollinated. Because of this, Quennel feels somewhat proprietary towards Ellery, but it isn’t a feeling that Ellery shares. Ellery’s initial emanation lasts only ten minutes, and he returns to the pleroma so that Tara can continue her sexual encounter with Quennel. He loses his virginity during the cross-pollination experiments, where his pollination is intended simply to make Owen and Lugh receptive to each other. However, it becomes clear that the other branches have an extreme reaction to him, both inside of and outside of the pleroma. Pollen count increases enormously, but it seems to disrupt n’aashet n’aaverti.
Ellery retreats to his quarters on the swan boat and refuses to emerge for the duration of the novel. At the instigation of the CCPR, Ross has a conversation with him whereby Ross determines that Ellery should be left alone. Quennel initiates a passionate pollen partnership with Evan, which gets Ellery off the hook with him. When Tara enters the pleroma for the final experiment, Ellery sends her a note requesting a private conversation. He reveals that he is the emanation which embodies the truth of Ashtara’s heart, which is the reason every emanation wants to possess him. He says that if he emerges prematurely, that truth could be corrupted.
